Genetic Testing and Genetic Manipulation and The Future of...
What if I told you humans have the ability to test for every known disease that you could possibly be susceptible to in a lifetime? What if I told you we could reduce health care costs by eliminating diseases that drive up insurance premiums? What if I told you humanity could get smarter merely by the manipulation of DNA? Well we can, and we have the technology. Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins. It is not eugenics, immoral, or murder. It is merely a test. Contrary to what many critics will say, genetic testing and genetic manipulation can play a vital role in shaping humanities future and development and although some precautions should be put in place to insure it is not used in an incorrect matter the benefits far outweigh the cons. Genetics was first established in 1866 by Gregor Mendel and his paper on inheritance of pairs. He used peas to prove that certain traits were passed on through the generations and it became the foundation for all research done in the future. This development led to Friedrich Miescher discovering the existence of DNA in 1869, though the importance of the discovery was not embraced by the academic community for a great many years. The first linkage map of DNA map was created in 1913 and this lead to the eugenics movement. The eugenics movement was established in the 1930s and essentially wanted to create a perfect master race by the elimination of people with certain traits.Show MoreRelatedGenetic Engineering : A World Where Autism And Downs Syndrome1270 Words à |à 6 PagesGenetic Engineering Imagine a world where autism and downs syndrome are a thing of the past, and where there is no shortage on food for anybody. Over the years mankind has developed and improved technology to save more and more lives through the manipulation of the DNA that makes up all living organisms. However, there are those who oppose this approach. Despite the risks and ethical concerns, genetic engineering holds the potential to benefit humanity through both direct and indirect means. InRead MoreGenetic Testing or Genetic Screening1514 Words à |à 7 PagesGenetic testing, also known as screening, is a rapidly advancing new scientific field that can potentially revolutionize not only the world of medicine, but many aspects of our lives. Genetic screening is the sequencing of human DNA in order to discover genetic differences, anomalies, or mutations that may prove pathological. As genetic screening becomes more advanced and easily accessible, it presents society with difficult questions that must be asked about the boundaries of science and to whatRead MoreThe Ethics Of Genetic Engineering Essay1940 Words à |à 8 Pagesnot it improves the lives of humans and whether or not it is considered part of the social norm. It stands to reason that Genetic engineering can be accepted and subsequently refined to evolve the human race, as shown with its ability to improve quality of life through advancements in agriculture and medicine. Genetic engineering is the manual m odification of an organismââ¬â¢s genetic composition by artificial means in order to transfer the specific traits, genes from one organism into a plant or animalRead MoreAltering Humanity : Ethical Or Immoral2347 Words à |à 10 Pages Altering Humanity: Ethical or Immoral Thousands of years ago, humans were pushing the limits of technology through agriculture in ways such as domesticating animals or making the wheel. Today our dedication to understanding and trying to control the world is leading us to engage in controversial topics and ethical debates. Curiosity is one of our race s greatest gifts but, it is also a curse on the human population. The classic story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelly showed a scientist s curiosityRead MoreThe Invention Of Designer Babies902 Words à |à 4 Pagesare many pros involved in the creation of designer babies. First, a popular argument is, scientists would have the ability to prevent diseases, such as Huntingtonââ¬â¢s disease and Down syndrome, by directly manipulating genes and implanting ââ¬Å"healthyâ⬠genetic sequence into human germ cells (Resnik). Additionally, some people argue that natural selection fails to achieve perfection. Natural selection is the process in which species adapt to their envi ronment. Natural selection leads to evolutionary changeRead MoreThe Ethical Relationship Between Technology and Medicine Essay1315 Words à |à 6 Pagestechnology enables genetic testing, which speaks loudly about the essence of a person and its progeny, which can redefine the expectations of that person, their family and their neighbors. If you find the gene for a disease, the patient may be stigmatized and subject to prejudice or exclusion. For example, if a simple test could predict early death unequivocally heart disease or cerebrovascular disease, what employer would invest in the professional development of that person?. Genetic testing can make predictionsRead MoreIn The Early 1900ââ¬â¢S Russian Plant Geneticist Georgi Dmitrievich1220 Words à |à 5 Pagesproduced a plant with the roots of a cabbage and leaves of a radish (Pierce 257). It was effectively useless. In spite of this humorous result, the meaningful conclusion is that when a biological system is not fully un derstood, the outcome of genetic manipulation cannot be reliably predicted. Actions intended to produce a positive result could produce the exact opposite. This is an extremely relevant warning given that the technical capacity for editing the human genome is unprecedented. New advancementsRead MoreEssay about The Morals and Ethics of Genetic Engineering3310 Words à |à 14 Pagesscientific breakthrough, genetic engineering has been on a path toward changing the world since its introduction in 1973 by Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer (What). However, as genetic engineering slowly permeates the lives of humanity, the morals and ethics behind what are now common practices are entering public attention, and as a culture we are left to question whether the change brought on by such a discovery bring benefits and positive change, or damage and destruction. Genetic engineering is justifiedRead MoreMore Human Than Human2325 Words à |à 10 PagesQuest for Perfection? by Goodman and Designer Genes by McKibben the authors present the possibility of genetic testing and cloning becoming a common place practice in life. In both writings the autho rs state the possible pros and cons of the science, while leaning towards the more detrimental effects of it. Can genetic testing and cloning bring a positive light to health sciences and therefore humanity or is it opening Pandoraââ¬â¢s Box, ultimately leading to our destruction. In Cure or Quest for PerfectionRead MoreIs Technology a Solution or a Danger to Our Health and Society?1428 Words à |à 6 Pages Is Technology A Solution Or A Danger To Our Health And Society? Over the last few years of my life, technology evolved in an abrupt manner. Science and its inventions over the centuries have made life easier and enjoyable. The future of genetics, neuroscience, and biotechnology bear the potential to transform our world for the better. Any technology that offers benefits will usually come with risks as well. In order to make wise decisions about using a technology, we must understand its potential
